PenTrans Vision & Mission

Through the enabling power of efficient, affordable, accessible transportation alternatives, Pennsylvania will develop more economically vibrant, environmentally sustainable communities where all people can move freely and safely to work, to shop and to all the social, cultural, educational and recreational activities of daily living.

The purpose of PenTrans is to generate public and private support for balanced, multimodal transportation and mobility alternatives that improve our quality of life, so that state and federal lawmakers will allocate sufficient dedicated public transportation funding for Pennsylvania.

A message from PenTrans Co-Chairs

Bev Harper and Tom Spearing:

Dear Friend of PenTrans:

Thanks to those of you who have supported PenTrans and our mission to bring adequate, dedicated funding to transit and other mobility and access improvements in Pennsylvania. We can give ourselves a pat on the back for vigorously supporting and campaigning to get robust transit funding into the recently passed federal stimulus package.

But much remains to be accomplished in 2010 and the years that follow.  Along with transit stakeholders across the country PenTrans already is turning to the issue of a new federal transportation authorization bill – an opportunity for major long-term transit and economic revitalization.  The bill could be enacted as early as this fall.
If you or your organization are not PenTrans members, now is the time to jump on board - while we're on a roll! Now is the time to be a part of the solution by continuing to lend your support to PenTrans.

As PenTrans members, we are proud to have played an active, supportive role in achieving the 2007 victory embodied in the landmark Pennsylvania Act 44 legislation from Harrisburg.  But with tolling I-80rejected, Act 44 is living on borrowed money.
The lack of a long-term funding source for Act 44 exemplifies the ongoing perils that we must overcome. The good of the entire Commonwealth depends on a comprehensive solution that best serves the mobility and access needs of all our regions and localities.

At both the Federal and state level, the economic and environmental well-being of our businesses and families continues to be dependent on the  public and political will to mobilize our resources against a host of challenges: air pollution, traffic congestion, the global warming crisis, dependence on foreign oil, as well as the race for clean, renewable energy and energy conservation technologies.  Transportation policy is at the heart of these challenges. The progress that PenTrans has helped establish cannot allow us to become complacent in the face of our remaining objectives!

Our Forums, legislative outreach, newsletters and editorial comments will continue to encourage public and private stakeholders and their elected representatives to revitalize Pennsylvania transportation infrastructure and operations.

With your help, we will persist in advancing integration of transportation modes with land use reforms that will provide the people of the Commonwealth with more livable, sustainable communities – cities and towns with “complete streets” – friendly to walkers, cyclists and window shoppers as well as to vehicles.
So please renew your membership or join PenTrans now!

Yours truly,
Beverly Harper and Tom Spearing
